“Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot … Be water, my friend.”
Bruce Lee
Hong Kong-American martial artist, actor, and philosopher
On a lived level this past week, I’ve come to the wisdom of Bruce Lee’s philosophy while helping my father through an unexpected stint in the hospital and then later at home after surgery. For me, becoming more fluid looked like holding on to myself very, very tightly while holding everything else — like regular routines and schedules — very, very lightly. I have to admit I discovered this wisdom quite late in the week, quite late as my first survival instinct is to hang onto my stabilizing routines and schedules, but once I did it felt like a jiu-jitsu of quiet power, a calmer way of being.
I have a feeling today will be a day where a level of fluidity might help. Warm wishes to everyone for that.
